The unique subject in this piece was an opportunity to capture a completely different subject matter in my favorite medium; colored charcoal pencils on black illustration board. The reference was photographed by a friend (Tyler), taken 20 meters underwater. I love the colors produced by ‘frontal lighting’ from his underwater camera. The story here might be obvious for some, yet others might not see a distressed crab. He is trying to hide behind the kelp that keeps waving in the current. Notice the crab is missing one claw.
